About the Object

Every Era Opus ashtray is set with a genuine Roman coin from the imperial world — an artifact struck when the civilization it served still stretched from Britain to the Euphrates.

The coin is not a reproduction. It is not a commemorative. It was handled in the ancient world and it rests within the object now. The wood comes from a different register of time. We found it. We gave it form.

The Roman Legacy Ashtray — handcrafted from ancient reclaimed redwood, set with an authenticated Roman coin.
The Roman Legacy Ashtray

An object in two registers of time.

The coin carries the mark of an empire gone for nearly two millennia. The wood surrounding it belongs to a world no living person can reproduce. Together they arrive on your desk as a single object — functional, silent, and entirely without equivalent.

Handcrafted by Casey Jenkins from ancient reclaimed redwood. Set with an authenticated Roman coin. Each piece individually numbered. 13½″ × 13½″.

The Coin

Rome. Empire. Two thousand years.

The coin in each ashtray comes from the Roman imperial world — when coins moved through military camps, marketplaces, provincial offices, and the hands of everyone from senators to soldiers across a civilization that stretched from Britain to Mesopotamia. Each was struck for use, not display.

The specific emperor, denomination, reverse figure, date, and surface condition vary by piece. Some coins bear imperial portraits. Others carry the symbols of Roman civic and divine life — victory, peace, providence, the bounties of empire. Each was made for public life in the ancient world. Each one survived.

Its patina — the deep brown and verdigris surface — is the product of age, mineral contact, and nearly two thousand years of passage. No two coins in Era Opus's collection are identical in relief, wear, field, inscription, or history.

The Object

Ancient reclaimed redwood. Authenticated Roman coin. Handcrafted by one man.

Ancient growth Centuries in grain Reclaimed. Still here.
The Wood

Centuries before it was yours, it was standing.

The redwood Era Opus uses is among the oldest living material available to a craftsman. Ancient, dense, and visually singular, it carries the slow record of centuries in grain, color, weight, and ring.

This is not plantation wood and not decorative veneer. It is ancient reclaimed redwood, selected individually for character, stability, density, and presence. The source is finite. When this material is gone, it is gone.

The Making

Each one takes time that cannot be shortened.

Casey Jenkins was raised in Anchorage, Alaska, around his father's woodworking shop. He spent years in finance before returning to the bench — not as a retreat, but as a decision about what kind of work leaves something behind.

Each ashtray begins as a section of reclaimed redwood assessed for grain, color, and structural integrity. The coin setting is recessed and fitted to the specific coin that will occupy it — because no two coins are identical in diameter, thickness, surface, or wear.

The finished surface receives hand applied oil and wax. The coin is seated into its setting with care appropriate to an artifact. The base bears the piece number, craftsman's mark, and date of completion.

Each piece numbered No. 047

The Ritual

Some hours deserve a proper stage.

A cigar is one of the few pleasures that still requires patience. The cutting, the lighting, the first third, the long middle, the resolution — each stage has its own character, its own demand. An hour with a good cigar is an hour spent differently from any other.

The object you rest it on matters. Not for ceremony's sake — because the objects that frame a ritual either elevate it or diminish it. The Roman Legacy Ashtray is designed for the ritual as much as for the ash. The notch holds without slipping. The surface is warm to the touch. The coin at the center gives the eye somewhere to rest.

No.

Each piece is numbered in sequence. Each coin differs in emperor, relief, patina, age, and history. Each section of redwood differs in grain, color, density, and character. Two buyers will not own the same object.

A Note

Objects made to be kept.

We are three people who decided, independently and then together, that there was a category of object missing from the world.

Not a cigar accessory. Not a decorative item. Not a souvenir of ancient Rome. Something at the intersection of all three — but made with the seriousness of none of those categories and the ambition of something genuinely different.

Casey brings the hands. Moses brings the discipline. Adam brings the lineage. Between us we have enough history — with wood, with institutions, with markets, with the making of things — to know the difference between an object made to be sold and one made to be kept.

“The objects you choose for your private hours are among the most honest statements you make about what you value.”

The Object in Context

Ancient redwood beneath an ancient coin. What the photograph cannot convey is the weight of what you are holding.

Ancient growth Centuries in grain Reclaimed. Still here.
The Wood

Older than the hand that shapes it.

Redwood has a kind of silence few materials possess. It grows slowly, records time visibly, and carries a depth of color and grain that cannot be forced by modern production.

The source is finite. When this is gone, it is gone.

Their Convergence

A Roman coin. Ancient redwood. One object.

The coin was struck in the ancient world. The redwood belongs to a separate register of time. Casey sets one into the other in a workshop today. You receive both.

This is not a metaphor. These are material facts. The function of Era Opus is to recognize their significance — not to manufacture it — and give it a form appropriate to a desk, a study, a ritual.

Era Opus — About
About Era Opus

Three men and one conviction.

That the objects we keep should be worthy of keeping.

Era Opus was not built from a market gap analysis. It was built from a disagreement with the available world.

The cigar ritual is one of the oldest acts of masculine refinement. The objects that attend it have largely not kept pace. The market moves between novelty, branding, and ornament. Too few objects in it treat the ritual with the gravity it deserves.

We asked a different question: what would an object look like if it were made, first, to be kept? Not merely used, displayed, or gifted — but genuinely kept. Passed on. Inherited. Acquired by the kind of person who understands that the objects chosen for private hours are among the most honest statements you make about what you value.

The answer involved ancient Rome. It involved the oldest forests in North America. It involved a craftsman who grew up knowing the difference between a joint that holds and one that only looks like it will.

Casey Jenkins

Raised in Anchorage among sawdust and hand tools. Spent years in finance before returning to the bench — not as a retreat, but as a decision about what kind of work leaves something behind. He carves each ashtray himself. There is no production line. There is Casey, the wood, the coin, and however long it takes to do it correctly.

Moses Cho

A Marine's understanding of structure: nothing is decoration if it doesn't serve function. Before Era Opus, his work moved through global strategy, operating discipline, and institutions built at scale. He brings to the brand the same clarity, removing what does not belong until what remains is correct.

Adam Simpson

From a family whose relationship with timber spans five generations. Began in investment banking and spent the years since building companies around strategy, design, story, and durable objects. Era Opus is, among other things, a return to material, memory, and the meaning of what remains.

We make one object. We make it well. We make it from materials no living person produced and no future person can replicate.

That is the whole of it.
